Long-Distance Relationships

Some say long distance relationships just don’t last, but hey, what do they know? After being a part of Head, Johnson & Kachigian, P.C. for over 22 years now and after working directly with our clients and associates worldwide throughout these years, I would beg to differ with them. Head, Johnson & Kachigian, P.C. has many long distance, and long lasting, relationships with some of the greatest associates and clients around the world. So, what does HJK possess that makes these long-distance relationships flourish?
Since 1958, Head, Johnson & Kachigian has been a boutique law firm specializing in intellectual property matters providing our clients, both domestic and worldwide, with professional and personalized services. Our attorneys have many years of experience and extensive knowledge of the U.S. patent, trademark and copyright laws and procedures. We nurture our relationships by going above and beyond to understand the needs of the clients and it is exhibited in our day to day business. Our firm has been listed in the Intellectual Property Today “Top Patent Firms” and “Top Trademark Firms” for a number of years now, including 2014.
Many of our U.S. clients require international protection for their intellectual property matters and we are pleased to offer this service.
Some of the options available for filing international patent applications include: (1) file directly into each country, "national filing"; (2) file an application under the European Patent Convention (EPC); or (3) file an application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
Filing directly into each country, filing a European Community Trademark Application (CTM), and filing under the Madrid Protocol are some options for filing for international trademark protection.
With our network of associates, we have the capability of filing patents and trademarks globally for our U.S. clients. With their help, we have successfully filed and prosecuted both patents and trademarks around the world, including Canada, Mexico, Europe, Germany, Bahrain, Italy, France, Argentina, Netherlands, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, India, and many other countries.
One trait that solidifies long-distance relationships is the fact that they are mutual. Not only do our associates act as our counsel representing our clients in their respective countries, but our attorneys act as local counsel for our associates representing their clients in the United States. Taking into consideration the time differences and having reasonable expectations are also valuable assets in building mutual relationships.
Among other filings, our firm works closely with our clients and associates to timely file and prosecute: (1) U.S. National Phase of PCT applications, (2) U.S. applications claiming international priority, (3) U.S. Utility, Provisional, and Design Patent Applications for international inventors with no priority, (4) Assignments and Change of Name Documents, (5) payment of maintenance fees, (6) U.S. trademark applications with and without priority, (7) Madrid Protocol filings, (8) Section 8&15 Declarations of Use, (9) Section 71 Declarations, and (10) Trademark Renewals.
We pride ourselves in providing these services with quick turnaround and response times, with some even being same day or last minute filings. We forward all communications from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to the associates in a timely manner and follow-up as necessary in order to prevent incurring unnecessary expenses and costs. As all law firms are different, we are willing to alter our services to make them more efficient for our associates and their staff if necessary.
As we understand the connection between our associates and their clients, we strive to provide the best services at reasonable rates. As such, our fee schedule for both patents and trademarks for our associates includes fixed fees for most matters and we provide debit notes simultaneously as the services are rendered. Our efficient in-house billing and docketing systems and our knowledgeable staff help make this possible. If you would like to obtain a copy of our International Fee Schedule for associates or would like to obtain estimates for particular filings, please contact me and I will be happy to provide it to you.
On a more personal basis, it is always a pleasure for our attorneys and staff to meet our associates at various conferences or meetings. We have also had, and welcome, the opportunity to host many associates at our offices. If you are ever in the neighborhood or planning a trip to the U.S., please feel free to give us a call to schedule a visit. The doors to Moore Manor are always open!
The personal touch combined with knowledge, communication, trust, loyalty, reliability and our dedication to client service makes Head, Johnson & Kachigian’s long distance relationships last. With that being said, I would like to extend a special “Thank You” to each and every one of our international associates for filing and prosecuting applications on behalf of our clients and for entrusting to our firm the filing and prosecuting of your client’s intellectual property needs in the U.S. Thank you!
