Notice of Reformatted Trademark Registration Certificates

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) is reformatting certificates of registration issued for registered trademarks. The reformatted trademark registration certificates began issuing in September 2009, and applies to trademarks on both the Principal Register and the Supplemental Register. The USPTO is making these changes in order to streamline the issuance of trademark registration certificates and for purposes of cost containment, modernization and efficiency.
The reformatted trademark registration certificates will be printed on standard-size 8½ x 11 inch paper, rather than on the custom size paper on which they are currently printed. The folder that is part of the current trademark registration certificate will be eliminated. The signature of the Director of Trademarks and the seal of the Trademark Office, which currently appear on the folder, will appear on the first page of the reformatted trademark registration certificate. Finally, the registration maintenance information, which also currently appears on the folder, will appear on the final page of the reformatted trademark certificate.
